What should I ask?

Pretty simple, ask whatever you want to know about. Try to keep it appropriate, but otherwise, just be yourself!

Q: Do you consider Jess Klein the type of singer you would sponsor? She appeared at the Brink's closed-off area last Thursday to 4 people, not including me. They seem not to have known about MFMS. -RE
A: I am familiar with Jess Klein - she has performed in Madison several times over the past years. We do sponsor shows of the singer/songwriter genre. We even listed this show in our calendar page of our newsletter.

We have limited resources and cannot sponsor unlimited concerts, so we choose approx 6 shows to do in a year, but for these 6 shows we normally have over 100 requests. There are many musicians out there touring and we can't sponsor them all.

I'm not sure why her management/booking agent would not know of our organization - a quick Google search would find us and we regularly attend music conferences both for midwest and national each year where there are many, many agents and musicians.

Thank you for your inquiry and your support of live music!

Q: Looking for folk music festival vacation suggestions in the US or Canada - info on sites, dates, accomodations and description of the events would be helpful
A: Mad Folk does not currently have a comprehensive list of festivals....In the past we have compiled some info (when we had a volunteer willing to take the time) but do not have that this year. Google searches would be our best suggestion at this point. If I learn of good resources I will post here again or add to the website.

Q: anything going on the last week in June?
(btw, I was around for the early days, 74-6, and still possess copies of the newsletter; do you keep an archive?)
A: There is at least one house concert we know of happening in late June. Watch this page for upcoming events: http://madfolk.org/events/upcoming.htm

For archives of newsletters (we do have quite a few but not from the '70s) see here:
http://madfolk.org/archives/newsletters.htm
If you would like to share your copies of the newsletter in electronic form (scan) we could add them to the archives. Or mail copies to us -- See the website for contact info!

Q: I would like to find a folk group where people do not
drink or who are not judgmental --like the Moldy Jam.
Moldy Jam is a very closed insider group.
A: Hmmm...It sounds like maybe you are looking for an open mic group or jam group. That's not what we are. We promote folk/acoustic concerts by touring performers, mostly, but do not hold jam events or open mics. However we do usually have some occasional singalong events in the summer (select Fridays) that are very family-oriented, generally held at Blue Mounds park. You can watch our website for details.

Q: Bill Malone mentioned Fiefs to hear music. Is there such a place?
A: Hmm....We do not know of such a place. Perhaps it was an old show and he was talking about Fyfe's, which has now closed? Or maybe he was talking about a different city?

Q: Can I find a group with which to play my fiddle?
A: Hi there - You might take a look at this site --
http://swbmai.org/calendar/
They have some jams (see their calendar) and such and if you connect with some of those players they might know of other options as well.
You might also contact these luthiers:

Good luck!

Q: As a fan, what kind of contact should I expect from MadFolk?
A: Thanks for asking! Generally we send a notice just before each concert as a reminder, and we'll mention a few other things in that message for events farther out. So in general you'll get a message from Mad Folk about once a month. (If you are a paid member you'll also get a print newsletter once a month.)

Q: Hi! I just recently moved to Madison from Minneapolis and am looking for a mandolin teacher. I have 19 years of violin experience, and several years of casual guitar experience. Any recommendations?
A: I'd suggest starting with a call to Spruce Tree Music here in Madison:
http://www.sprucetreemusic.com/
They have several instructors on their roster. There are also another couple of music businesses such as Ward Brodt Music Mall that have in-house instructors, but for a folk-oriented instrument like mandolin, I recommend checking with Spruce Tree first.
